She wrote her first story, a Mayan murder mystery, in seventh grade. Then came gymnastics, math team, and boyfriends; later a husband, car payments, and a sleep-depriving schedule at newspapers across the country. She spent years as a science journalist, translating how the brain works into something anyone could follow — good training, as it turns out, because finding the human being inside the big idea is the whole job in fiction too.
Her science fiction is less interested in the hardware than in the people living alongside it — including the ones the law hasn’t got around to calling people yet.
